Few rivers and many thermal baths for a territory, between the Val d'Orcia and Val di Chiana, joined to the waters that has always offered man optimal life.The same Via Francigena, not surprisingly, wound its run grazing the steaming tub of Vignoni Bath and the "bluffs" of limestone of Baths St. Filippo: places, even then, frequented from illustrious characters and from an infinite multitude of pilgrims. Each zone has but a direct relationship with the thermal sources: a little everywhere have been recovered traces of ancient thermal baths, like in San Casciano dei Bagni and, of course, in Chianciano, as evidenced by the significant discovery of relics from a thermal building Roman epoch and from an Etruscan temple dedicated to a god of "healthy water", now preserved in the archaeological museum of the city. After the fall of the Roman Empire, throughout the Middle Ages, the interest toward the thermal baths weakened, to reappear only in the XIV century and stay alive and unchanged over time as evidenced by the numerous structures born around the sources. Federico Fellini has made grow hotels, parks, shopping and entertainment venues around the sources of Acqua Santa and St. Helena, immortalizing Chianciano Terme in his "Eight and a half". Just three km from Chianciano, in the hamlet of Sant'Albino we find the Terme di Montepulciano, cutting-edge research and application of thermal treatments. Move definitely in the Valdichiana we find the sulfur waters of Rapolano and finally the gigantic thermal swimming pool of Sarteano.

The treaty "de Thermis" by Andrea Bacci edited in 1571 contains several passages on the sulfur springs that flow in S. Albino di Montepulciano. The establishment of the Terme di Montepulciano was founded in 1966 with the goal of a rational and scientific use in the therapeutic properties of these sulfur waters and rich with minerals in the subsoil, specializing in the treatment of diseases of the respiratory system, and skin.
